It's only the third week of uni and I've already had 2 quizzes (forgot the first one so I failed it by accident LOL :/ ), a field trip done, handed in 4 brain-chewing reports... and still a MASSIVE pile of readings awaiting for MOI.
But I'm really enjoying this semester, everything is so new and different from second-stage papers! and lots of colouring too :)
Let you all look see what I did for my first week lab:
First of all, we were given a set of stratigraphic columns sampled from isolated outcrops of Quaternary sediments along the highway. Our first task is to identify different sedimentary facies/structures/trendings.
Why do we have to do this? so we can identify/interpret the depositional environment, then interpolate between the columns to construct a 3D stratigraphic profile (Fence diagram)

So the photo below shows different locations containing different layers of soil/rocks. We will find soil/rock layers that have same rock types, same structures (maybe water ripples? good visible laminations?) or contain same type of fossils, then colour them with the same colour.


The time line = tephra layer. It's a volcanic ash layer that allows us to trace back time (very accurately!)
we're using that as our marker bed~so we can know the relative ages of the beds on top of it.
then we start correlating similar soil/rock layers from different columns.
and....

it's showing how the same sediment layers are joined up in 3D.

Why is Fence diagram important?
1)can tell from diagram that the sea-level has dropped.
2)see the little black& white tube in the diagram? that's a tidal/river channel. This is a potential oil reservoir!! we can use fence diagram to estimate the location of paleo-channels and earn BIG BIG $$ by selling our findings to oil-exploration companies! hohoo
